Wool & Honey Sweater Review

Wool & Honey knit sweater in Brooklyn Tweed Loft

Let’s just take a moment to celebrate the fact that I finally finished this sweater.

Ok, moment’s over.

I’ve had the Wool & Honey sweater in my queue for such a long time. It’s a sweater I’ve wanted for so long, but every time I look at all the garter stitch in the round (meaning every other round is purled 😩), I would say no. Finally, in the midst of the quarantine, I decided this was the perfect time to start it.

I really loved this sweater in the recommended yarn and color, LOFT by Brooklyn Tweed in Embers. Not only is the color beautiful, but it perfectly represents the idea of a honeycomb. I took advantage of the sale Brooklyn Tweed ran over the summer and ordered a bunch, and let me tell you, this yarn is the shit. It’s so soft and the color is gorgeous.

This is the softest wool yarn I’ve ever worked with. It’s also super light-weight. Just be careful, it’s delicate and breaks easily with enough force!

Starting the pattern was actually pretty fun. It uses a series of wrapped stitches to create the honeycomb effect, and watching it come to life is really exciting. I was surprised with how quickly I knit through the top portion of the sweater, and in no time the sweater really started to come to life.

By the time I got through the honeycomb pattern in the yoke, it was really something to be proud of. It’s such a beautiful pattern, you really can’t deny it. But then comes allllll the garter stitch. This was not my favorite, but at least it’s mindless enough to do while watching Netflix.

I went in knowing this sweater would be a bit boxy, so I knit the XS size in hopes that would help. I’m more of a pear shape, so form-fitting tops work better for me. Knowing that, I wish I had also opted to add in some decreases for additional shaping. When people say this sweater is boxy, IT IS BOXY. Based on several reviews I read on just how short this sweater was, I added 3” to the length to try and help balance it out (also I’m a little past my crop top phase in life 🤷🏻‍♀️). I think the length helped, but man, this sweater is like a tent on me. Even in XS.

You can see just how wide it is, and I’m a little disappointed there weren’t some options on narrowing the waistline just a bit. This is clearly not a cut meant for all body types. To be fair, that’s kind of my fault too, I knew this going in and should have made my own modifications. Lesson learned.

After trying it on, it looks ok in the front, but the back kind of bubbles out under the shoulder blades. I still need to block the sweater and am really hoping this helps. Stay tuned as I try to work some post-knit magic to make this fit a little better. At least it’s cozy for lounging around the house!

Final takeaways

The yarn: Man. This yarn is amazing. Seriously, it’s not scratchy at all, and is actually soft. It’s so comfortable on my skin, I’m so impressed with it. It does break easily so that’s something to keep in mind, but it’s easy to fix with a wet splice (here’s a super helpful link on the best methods for wet splicing!). The color options are also perfection. I will happily use LOFT again, and am eager to try other yarns from Brooklyn Tweed.

The pattern: Honestly, I’m back and forth. I LOVE the pattern itself - the honeycomb pattern is so beautiful and looks so great against the garter stitch. It’s so clever. I just wish it fit a little better. The sizing is just so weird, at least for my body type. Definitely make sure you are ok with a SUPER boxy sweater, and if not - MODIFY! Don’t be like me. 😅
